Oppo has a plan to end its global patent fight with Nokia

Oppo and Nokia have been in a 5G patent dispute for over two years. One consequence of the disagreement was Oppo being blocked from selling its devices in Europe. Now, Oppo has urged Nokia to follow the global 5G royalty rates set by a Chinese local court and put an end to their patent-fee feud.
The dispute between the two companies over global licensing fees was taken to the Chongqing First Intermediate People’s Court. The court recently ruled in favor of Oppo, setting lower royalty rates for Nokia’s standard essential patents for 2G to 5G technologies.
Oppo has welcomed the court’s decision, and has agreed to pay $0.707 to $1.151 per unit, depending on different markets. The smartphone maker hopes that Nokia will also comply with the decision, “so that both parties can quickly return to constructive negotiations.” Nokia’s website states that it charges a maximum licensing fee of €3 ($3.24) per 5G smartphone.
Nokia, in a statement to the South China Morning Post, said they would appeal to the ruling, emphasizing that it only applies to the Chinese jurisdiction and represents a single viewpoint. “Courts outside of China have confirmed that Oppo is in breach of its commitments as a user of Nokia’s technology in open standards. We remain confident of our position in the overall dispute and are hoping to resolve the matter soon,” it added.
Last year, Oppo lost a lawsuit for patent infringement against Nokia in Germany. As a result, the company is not allowed to sell some of its handsets in Germany. Oppo has removed most of its products from its German website. Earlier this year, an Indian court ordered Oppo to pay Nokia a licensing fee equal to 23% of the Chinese company’s local sales.
Vivo, which is a sister company of Oppo, faced lawsuits from Nokia that were similar in nature. As a result, Vivo stopped selling its products in Germany in May.

DRDO develops anti-drone tech, BEL and other private companies to work on it

The Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) recently sought interest from companies to develop anti-drone technology. Now, a report by The Hindu has revealed that DRDO has asked BELL, Larsen and Toubro, and Adani Group to develop the tech. In its expression of interest, DRDO detailed how anti-drone technology works and why it is needed.
“To mitigate and negate the impact of drones, there is a requirement to develop and deploy counter drone systems for detection, deterrence and destruction of incoming drone threats,” said DRDO in the EOI letter.
As per DRDO, considering the unique nature of drones in terms of speed, size, hovering capability and resemblance to birds, no sensor system in standalone will be able to provide sufficient detection, tracking and identification capability to guarantee a reliable
and effective defense against threats from drones. Conventional air defense solutions currently available with the country, which are designed to detect large, fast moving aerial objects, are not effective against small, low flying and slow-moving drones. “Therefore, a combination of several types of detection capabilities including emission and reflection of microwave, infrared, visible light etc are required to detect and identify drones,” noted DRDO.
How does a counter drone system work?
A counter-drone system is designed to detect, track, and identify airborne drones through the utilization of diverse sensors. It facilitates the seamless transfer of this information to affiliated systems, enabling the deployment of counter techniques to thwart their intended operations. These countermeasures include soft kill methods to disrupt functionality and hard kill options for the outright destruction of the detected drones, as per DRDO
The system can detect, identify and neutralize different types of drones including Small Hybrid UAVs, Micro UAV/Multi rotor, and Nano UAVs.
The Counter Drone System contains several integral components to effectively neutralize airborne threats. Firstly, it incorporates a state-of-the-art drone detection and tracking radar, ensuring precise monitoring of aerial targets. Complementing this radar capability, a day and night camera equipped with laser ranging technology enhances the system’s proficiency in detecting and tracking drones. To implement soft kill measures, the system features a Communication Channel Detection & Jamming system, effectively disrupting the communication channels of the targeted drones.
Additionally, a GPS Jamming/Spoofing System is integrated, further impeding the drones’ capabilities through GPS interference. For more decisive actions, a Laser Directed Energy Weapon System is included to execute hard kill strategies. Centralizing control and coordination, the Command & Control Center (C3) serves as the nerve center of the system, empowered by a reliable power source to ensure the seamless operation of the entire counter-drone system.

27 best Amazon travel tech gadgets

Your phone is dead. Your luggage was sent to the wrong airport. These sound like nightmares, but they can be a reality when you’re traveling. These mishaps are simply a part of the adventure, but you can be prepared with the help of travel tech gadgets.

Whether you’re traveling a few hours away or across the globe, there are travel gadgets that can help make your trip easier, safer and (mostly) headache-free. We spoke to a travel expert, tried a few products ourselves and sorted through hundreds of top-rated products on Amazon to find the best tech to pack for your next trip.

SKIP AHEAD The best travel tech

Our top picks

How we picked the best travel tech essentials

To figure out what types of travel tech are worth bringing along on your next trip — and which gadgets to skip — we spoke to several experts who have spent years traveling all around the world. Here’s what they recommended keeping in mind:

  • Size: As you consider travel gadgets, it’s important to evaluate their size and weight, especially if you have limited space in your carry-on or suitcase. If you’re planning to bring something oversized, be sure it’s worth the real estate in your bag. For instance, cameras are a popular item to bring while traveling, but many experts suggest leaving them behind because they’re bulky: “Cell phone cameras are so advanced now that you can take phenomenal photos on your mobile,” says Tom Marchant, co-founder of luxury travel company Black Tomato.
  • Convenience: Whether you’re taking a car, plane, train or bus, the best travel tech gadgets provide convenience when you’re on the road, ensuring you’re comfortable and prepared for common travel issues. Almost all of the experts we spoke to recommended a power bank as their top travel accessory. Marchant explains that these devices are a convenient way to charge electronics in airports, on airplanes (or other modes of transportation) and while exploring your destination.
  • Peace of mind: The right technology can also help reduce stress while you travel, allowing you to make the most of the experience. For this reason, our experts highly recommend devices like Bluetooth trackers, personal safety devices and noise-canceling headphones. “I always put AirTags in every piece of checked luggage, especially if making multiple transfers, as it can greatly save headaches and stress,” explains Marchant.
